Odyssey Mosaic Blanket Crochet-A-Long Video 1
Odyssey Mosaic Blanket
Video 1
Introduction with important information, please keep this handy for each week
The channel is celebrating its 10th anniversary in 2025 and on that special occasion I wanted to finally make a crochet blanket using the mosaic overlay technique.
We are diving into the world of mosaic crochet. When I started looking for designing this blanket I had to come up with a theme and for me when I think of mosaic my history teachers mind straight away goes to the mosaics in Greece and Italy. I noticed that there are certain designs that always come back in the Greek mosaics so I decided to use those keys as designs in this blanket. I have chosen colours that I have seen in mosaic floors in Greece and Cyprus and I hope you will like my designs.
Throughout the blanket we will have some simpler and some more intricate mosaic designs, some designs will be repeated others will be unique, all in all I hope it will be a design which you will look forward to creating. I have included a simple design in the double border, eliminating the need to sew in the ends.
The pattern for mosaic crochet is done by charts. The written out instructions are in this pattern too along with a chart detailing which video to watch for each part of the chart and blanket. Please find the videos (clearly numbered) in the Odyssey Mosaic Blanket playlist on my YouTube Channel Ophelia Talks Crochet.
Needed
Yarn
I used 15 Balls of Stylecraft Special DK from the Greek Odyssey Yarn Pack
Hook I used a 3.5 for DK, the yarn states a 4.
Scissors
Stitch markers
Highlighter
Please note
You will need the mosaic charts as well as your written out pattern each week, as well as the hints and tips in the videos.
You will not be using every colour each week. There are multiple balls of some colours in the pack.
As is typical for Mosaic Crochet, from Row 3 onwards, you are always starting your work on the right hand side of the panel and never turning. The same side of the blanket is always facing you.
You finish your row, cut off the yarn and you start the next row at the side where you started the previous row.
When you cut off the yarn, make sure you cut off the yarn leaving a 15 cm length as a minimum.
Keep careful track of your rows by highlighting them or indicating the rows you have done.
Keep track of your stitches by using stitch markers if this helps you. (Consider putting a stitch marker in the first stitch after the SC CH1, and in the last stitch before the final CH1 SC to ensure you don’t miss any stitches when working the row.)
!More rows have been added to the blanket pattern to make it slightly larger than my blanket. The designs are the same, there are more Row 4s in between the designs, so make sure you compare your blanket to the charts, and not the pictures of my blanket.
Multiples
The multiples change for each design but they all work out at one point (4 +1)
180 +1 + 4
Your stitch count throughout is 183 stitches and 2 chains
The mosaic part of your blanket is 181 stitches
The boxes for the border take up 4 stitches 2SC and 2CH
Please make sure you count regularly and keep track of your stitches
In the video I am making a sampler size of 45 CH. (40 +1 + 4)
Measurements
Length 137 cm / 54 inch
Width 110 cm / 43 inch
