There's an old saying that one swallow makes a summer — and this blanket will make yours.

The Summertime Blanket is a joyful, colour-drenched crochet blanket pattern worked in a flowing shell stitch that ripples across the fabric like sunlight on water. Fifteen bright DK shades, one simple repeat, and a finished blanket that brings a little brightness wherever it goes.

Instant PDF download. Includes the full blanket pattern, a bonus cushion cover and blanket pouch pattern, complete colour tables for both projects, and free companion video tutorials.

A crochet blanket pattern made by a whole family

What makes this design special is the story behind it. The vibrant colour palette was chosen by my husband Dirk, whose eye for colour brought together the most joyful combination of shades.

My mum, Christiane, then selected the stitch pattern, arranged the colour order, and crocheted the blanket herself with the skill and patience that only years of experience can bring. I was allowed to write the pattern, film the tutorial and — happily — appear in the Lookbook alongside my mum.

Then Mum decided she wasn't finished. She used the leftovers to make a matching cushion cover, so I surprised her by turning that cushion into a pouch the whole blanket folds away into. Both bonus patterns are included here, free.

What the finished blanket looks like

Generous, soft and full of movement, the Summertime Blanket is a proper full-size throw — big enough to spread across a bed, drape over a favourite armchair, wrap around your shoulders on a cool summer evening, or take to the beach for the day.

The open shell stitch creates gentle waves of colour with a light, airy drape — warm enough to snuggle under, breathable enough for summer. A crisp scalloped border in fresh Spearmint frames the whole thing and pulls the palette together beautifully.

Colours that make you want to keep going

The palette moves through fifteen happy shades — Aster, Grass Green, Powder Pink, Clementine, Bright Pink, Aquamarine, Green Lemon, Blush, Jade, Blue Sky, Fiesta, Spearmint, Pistachio, Fondant and Nigella — arranged so the colours unfold row by row. It's the kind of project where you genuinely can't wait to see what comes next.

A full numbered colour table is included so you can recreate the exact blanket in the photographs. Prefer to go your own way? The pattern also explains the "blind dip" method for making a happy, random palette from your own stash.

Relaxing to make, easy to follow

The whole blanket is built from one straightforward repeating row, so once you've found your rhythm it becomes wonderfully meditative — perfect for evenings, car journeys and box sets. Colour changes happen in tidy groups of rows, which means far fewer ends to sew in than most multi-colour blankets.

Written in US terminology with a clear stitch key, full stitch counts, tension guidance and a small practice sampler you can work through before casting on the full blanket. If you can chain, double crochet and count to five, you can make this.

Free video tutorials

Every step is supported by detailed video tutorials on the Ophelia Talks Crochet YouTube channel, including a separate video for the bonus cushion and pouch — so you're never left staring at a line of text wondering what it means.
